Non-Surgical Muscle Toning: Your Questions, Answered

Building muscle tone and definition isn’t always as straightforward as hitting the gym harder or adding more reps. Sometimes, despite your best efforts with diet and exercise, certain areas refuse to cooperate. That’s where Pure Impact by Sofwave can be a great option—it’s a non-invasive muscle toning treatment that helps you achieve the definition you’re working toward.

At our Eugene medical spa, we’ve been fielding plenty of questions about this FDA-cleared treatment since adding it to our body contouring options. Below, we answer the questions we hear most often from patients curious about Pure Impact.

Does Pure Impact actually work if I already exercise regularly?

Yes. Even dedicated gym-goers would like to see more definition in specific areas that won’t respond to traditional exercise. Pure Impact uses PlyoPulse™ technology to create supramaximal muscle contractions—contractions more intense than what you can produce voluntarily during a workout.

These contractions engage deeper muscle fibers and activate stabilizing muscles that don’t always get targeted during standard exercises. Many of our patients use Pure Impact to enhance the results they’re already getting from their fitness routine, adding definition and tone in stubborn areas like the lower abdomen or inner thighs.

Will Pure Impact make my muscles bigger?

Pure Impact focuses on toning, strengthening, and firming muscles rather than adding significant bulk. The treatment is designed to create lean, defined muscle rather than dramatic size increases.

For most patients, the goal is a more sculpted, athletic appearance—visible muscle definition without the “bodybuilder” look. The PlyoPulse technology mimics plyometric exercises, which are known for creating functional strength and toned muscle rather than hypertrophy (muscle size growth).

What’s the difference between Pure Impact and other body contouring treatments?

Pure Impact is purely a muscle toning treatment. It doesn’t reduce fat or address skin laxity—it strengthens and defines your existing muscle tissue.

CoolSculpting, by contrast, eliminates stubborn fat deposits through controlled cooling. Avéli reduces cellulite by releasing the fibrous bands beneath the skin. Sofwave tightens loose skin with ultrasound energy.

Each treatment serves a different purpose, which is why many of our Eugene med spa patients combine them for complete body contouring. If you have stubborn fat covering muscle, CoolSculpting might come first. If you have both fat and loose skin, you might benefit from three different treatments in a strategic sequence: CoolSculpting, Sofwave skin tightening, and then Pure Impact.

Can Pure Impact replace my workout routine?

No, and we wouldn’t recommend trying to. Pure Impact is designed to complement your existing fitness routine, not replace it. While the treatment delivers intense muscle contractions and can enhance tone and definition, it doesn’t provide the cardiovascular benefits, bone density support, metabolic boost, or mental health benefits of regular exercise.

Pure Impact is a targeted boost for specific areas that aren’t responding to your workouts—not as a substitute for staying active.

Will I be sore after treatment like I am after the gym?

Some muscle fatigue is common immediately after treatment, similar to how you’d feel after an intense workout. This typically resolves within a few hours and doesn’t prevent you from resuming normal activities.

Unlike post-workout soreness from exercise, which can last 24-48 hours, Pure Impact-related fatigue tends to be milder and shorter-lived. Most patients go straight back to work or other activities without any limitations.

Can Pure Impact help if I’ve hit a plateau with my fitness results?

Absolutely! When your muscles adapt to your regular workout routine, they stop responding as dramatically to the same stimuli; Pure Impact introduces a completely different type of muscle activation through electrical stimulation (EMS), which can jumpstart progress when traditional exercise has stopped producing visible changes.

What if I can’t exercise due to an injury or medical condition?

Pure Impact can be particularly valuable for patients who are temporarily unable to exercise due to injury, surgical recovery, or medical conditions that limit physical activity. The treatment allows you to maintain or even build muscle tone without placing stress on joints, bones, or injured areas.

That said, we’ll review your medical history carefully during your consultation to ensure Pure Impact is safe for your specific situation. Certain conditions, such as pacemakers or epilepsy, may prevent you from being a candidate.

Is Pure Impact uncomfortable or painful?

Most patients find Pure Impact comfortable. You’ll feel strong muscle contractions during treatment—similar to an intense workout—but the sensation shouldn’t be painful.

Our providers adjust the intensity based on your comfort level and goals. If at any point the contractions feel too intense, we can dial back the settings. The treatment should feel challenging but manageable, like a tough gym session rather than something uncomfortable.

Can I combine Pure Impact with other body contouring treatments?

Yes, Pure Impact pairs beautifully with other treatments, particularly Sofwave skin tightening. Since these treatments were developed by the same company and designed to work together, combining them is both safe and efficient.

If you’re treating your abdomen, we might use Pure Impact to tone the muscles and Sofwave to tighten any loose skin in the same session. This comprehensive approach addresses multiple concerns at once—muscle definition, skin laxity, and overall contour—for more dramatic, natural-looking results. Sofwave uses ultrasound technology to stimulate collagen production and firm loose skin, creating the ideal complement to Pure Impact’s muscle-toning effects.

How do I maintain my results long-term?

Your results are best maintained through a combination of maintenance treatments and healthy lifestyle habits. We typically recommend maintenance sessions every 2-3 months to keep muscles toned and defined.

Between treatments, continuing your regular exercise routine, eating a balanced diet with adequate protein, staying hydrated, and getting sufficient sleep all support your Pure Impact results.
