A Beginner’s Guide to Skincare for Men

Men’s skin ages differently than women’s. It’s often thicker and oilier in your 20s and 30s, then faster to show the effects of sun damage and collagen loss later on. The men who come into our Eugene med spa looking to address lines, texture, and dullness in their 40s and 50s almost always say the same thing: they wish they had started sooner.

If you are looking to start a basic skincare routine, you don’t need much. You just need to start. Here’s how.

Why Men’s Skin Is Different

Men’s skin is roughly 25% thicker than women’s and tends to produce more oil due to higher testosterone levels. Daily shaving introduces micro-irritation that gradually weakens the skin barrier. Men also sweat more, which affects pore congestion and overall hydration. These differences are real, but they don’t require a separate rulebook. The fundamentals of good skincare are the same for everyone, even though men are more prone to skip them entirely.

The Products Every Man Actually Needs

Just three products, used every day, will do more for your skin than an occasional elaborate routine ever will.

1. A gentle face cleanser

Bar soap strips the skin of its natural oils, triggering more oil production to compensate, which leads to congestion and dullness. A gentle face wash cleans without disrupting the skin’s protective barrier. We recommend cleansing morning and evening.

2. A moisturizer

Oily skin still needs moisture. Skipping moisturizer signals the skin to produce more oil to compensate for the deficit, making congestion worse over time. A lightweight, non-comedogenic formula applied after cleansing keeps skin balanced and supports an intact barrier.

3. Broad-spectrum SPF

UV exposure is the single largest driver of premature aging, including fine lines, dark spots, and loss of skin texture. Daily SPF is the most evidence-backed anti-aging step available. Apply sunscreen every morning, rain or shine. (Eugene’s overcast climate offers less protection than it appears to; UV rays penetrate cloud cover year-round.)

If you are unsure which products are right for your skin, a professional skincare evaluation takes the guesswork out of building your routine. Our aestheticians can even use a SkinCeuticals SkinScope LED analysis to identify your skin’s needs and reveal damage beneath the surface.

Your Daily Routine: AM and PM

Once you have your basics down, the routine takes under two minutes.

  • Morning: Cleanse, moisturize, SPF. In that order, every day.
  • Evening: Cleanse, moisturize. If you’ve added a retinoid (more on that below), apply it after cleansing on nights you aren’t shaving.

This is enough to start! Consistency over two to three months drives visible change; skin cell turnover takes roughly 28 days, so results compound with repetition, not speed.

Once You Have the Basics Down

Once your daily basics are locked in, these impactful additions are worth considering.

Eye cream

The skin around the eyes is the thinnest on the face and typically the first place men notice aging. A dedicated eye cream addresses puffiness, dark circles, and fine lines in this area where your regular moisturizer may fall short.

A retinoid

Retinoids are among the most well-researched ingredients in skincare. They work by boosting collagen production, accelerating cell turnover, and improving skin texture, tone, and fine lines over time. They are also used to treat acne and breakouts.

Start with a pea-sized amount every third night and increase frequency gradually as your skin adjusts. Prescription-strength formulas, available through a physician, deliver significantly more noticeable results than over-the-counter versions.

Lip balm with SPF

Lip skin is thin, lacks melanin, and has no sebaceous glands, making it vulnerable to UV damage and dehydration. A lip balm with SPF takes seconds to apply and provides protection that adds up meaningfully over time.

Skincare Mistakes Men Should Avoid

Using whatever’s in the shower. Body wash and shampoo are formulated for the body and scalp, not the face. They are typically harsh and will disrupt your facial skin barrier with regular use.

Skipping moisturizer because skin feels oily. Oily skin is often dehydrated skin trying to compensate. Moisturizer doesn’t add oil, it adds water and helps the skin regulate itself.

Over-exfoliating. Exfoliation is beneficial when done correctly, but daily use of scrubs or strong acids (especially on top of daily shaving) creates irritation and barrier damage. Two to three times per week is sufficient for most men, and chemical exfoliants like glycolic or salicylic acid are gentler than abrasive physical scrubs.

Not accounting for shaving. Freshly shaved skin is more sensitive and more permeable. Save stronger active ingredients like retinoids and exfoliating acids for non-shave days, or apply them only to non-shaved areas until your skin has adjusted.

Inconsistency. A basic routine done every day will outperform an elaborate one done occasionally. Give any new routine at least eight weeks before evaluating whether it works—that’s roughly two full skin cell renewal cycles.

When a Skincare Routine Isn’t Enough

Products lay a strong foundation, but some concerns respond better to professional treatment than anything available over the counter. Persistent dullness, enlarged pores, uneven texture, early wrinkles and lines, and sun damage all respond best to professional treatments.

At Ziba Medical Spa in Eugene, we offer a full range of treatments for men, including:

  • HydraFacial: deep cleansing, exfoliation, and hydration in a single 30-minute treatment with zero downtime
